Traps, 13 km of fishing net and almost 200 kg of fish seized during breeding season in PI
Over 13 kilometers of fishing nets and around 180 kg of fish were seized in Piauí during Operation Piracema I, aiming to curb illegal fishing during the reproductive period of fish.
In Piauí, Brazil, authorities conducted Operation Piracema I, which resulted in the confiscation of over 13 kilometers of fishing nets and approximately 180 kg of fish, underscoring the ongoing battle against illegal fishing practices during crucial reproductive periods for local fish species. This operation, led by the Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis (Ibama), began on October 3 and focuses on the Parnaíba River's watershed area, which is critical for maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems.
The inspection efforts revealed a significant haul of illegal fishing equipment, including fish traps and nets, with around 8 kilometers of nets found alone in a single inspection at Lagoa de Buriti dos Lopes. These efforts to combat illegal fishing are vital to ensure the sustainability of fish populations in the region, especially during the piracema, a key reproductive cycle for many fish species native to the Brazilian waterways.
As part of the operation, seized fish were donated through social initiatives, while the confiscated fishing nets and traps were either destroyed or rendered unusable. The operation also included support from the Environmental Police Battalion (BPA), highlighting the collaborative approach taken to enforce environmental laws and protect aquatic habitats against illegal exploitation, thereby reinforcing Brazil's commitment to preserving its natural resources.
