Research: New TUM Location at the Airport

The Technical University of Munich is establishing a new site at the airport with the 'TUM Convergence Center', focusing on future technologies such as mobility, robotics, and AI.

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is set to move to a new location at the airport mid-year, unveiling the 'TUM Convergence Center', a site dedicated to advanced research. This new facility spans 20,400 square meters and will host several academic chairs that are focused on future technologies including mobility, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI). Despite this expansion, regular classes and seminars will continue in Garching and Straubing, ensuring that the academic programs are not disrupted. The facility is expected to be completed by October 2026, coinciding with the beginning of the winter semester.

As of now, some offices have been occupied, but many rooms remain empty as the university is in the process of organizing furniture and equipment for these spaces. According to TUM's deputy press spokesman, Stefan Kögler, the wiring and necessary renovations will take some time before the facility is fully operational. Additionally, the university’s signage is still required for external visibility, indicating that there is a bit more work remaining before the center is fully ready to welcome its research community.

The Lab Campus, where the TUM Convergence Center will be situated, is a significant project initiated by the airport operators. This ambitious initiative is designed to create a hub for research institutions over an area equivalent to 70 football fields. The development aims to foster innovation and collaboration in cutting-edge technology fields, pointing to a future where academia and industry can bridge gaps and work together more effectively on major technological advancements.
