Fighting between the Sudanese army and rapid support forces on the outskirts of Bara city
Fierce battles have erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces at the outskirts of Bara city, according to Al Jazeera's field sources.
Fighting has broken out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces on the outskirts of Bara city in North Kordofan, as reported by field sources to Al Jazeera. The Sudanese army has confirmed that it conducted airstrikes against Rapid Support positions in the city on Tuesday. This escalation follows the army's earlier recapture of Bara in September, after a series of military operations aimed at pushing back the Rapid Support Forces from the area.
Bara holds a strategically significant position as it serves as a crucial junction connecting various provinces and is an essential export route linking western Sudan with its central, eastern, and northern regions. It is located about 40 kilometers from Al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, and prior to the Sudanese army's control, it was the closest area held by the Rapid Support Forces to the capital, Khartoum. The ongoing conflict over this territory reflects the larger struggle for control in the region amidst a backdrop of increasing violence and instability.
In addition to the military clashes, there are humanitarian concerns, as reports emerged of a massive fire that broke out at the Abu Jamal IDP camp in Darfur, resulting in the death of a child and the destruction of hundreds of makeshift homes that had recently housed displaced families. This situation contributes to an already dire humanitarian crisis in the region, highlighting the urgent need for assistance and intervention amid the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
