D. Kumelis, who became world champion with the 3x3 U23 team, takes over the management of a Dutch club

D. Kumelis, a Lithuanian basketball player turned coach, has taken over the management of a struggling Dutch club after winning a world championship title.

D. Kumelis, who recently clinched the world championship with Lithuania's 3x3 U23 basketball team, has transitioned from player to coach as he takes the reins of a Dutch club currently languishing at the bottom of the league standings. The team has seen dismal results with only one victory in 17 matches, leading to their placement in the 18th position. His focus now is to uplift the team's spirits and performance after experiencing his own setbacks due to a serious knee injury last summer.

Prior to his new coaching role, Kumelis had a stint with the 'Vyčiai-VDU' team in the ‘URBO-NKL’ league, but his summer injury prevented him from playing further. However, he stayed involved in the sport by serving as a substitute coach for a fellow coach and managing a VDU sports studies team in the RKL B division. His dedication to coaching the U23 Lithuanian teams has also been emphasized as a significant part of his development in the sport, highlighting his commitment to fostering young talent.

In taking on the responsibility of guiding the Dutch club, Kumelis expressed his excitement about returning to the Netherlands, a place pivotal to his basketball career while aiming to restore confidence among the players and the team's overall dynamics. He has a clear vision for the club to achieve much more than its current situation suggests, and he believes that with commitment and the right attitude towards the game, they can make significant progress together.
