Nationwide makes major change for customers and is 'first in UK'

Nationwide has become the first UK lender to allow customers to electronically sign mortgage deeds without a witness, aiming to streamline the home-buying process.

Nationwide has taken a significant step by becoming the first lender in the UK to permit electronic signatures for mortgage deeds without the need for a witness. This innovation is viewed positively, with a mortgage broker describing it as a "brilliant move forward" that could enhance the efficiency of mortgage transactions. However, a conveyancer expressed concerns that many in the market are not yet prepared for such advancements.

The ability for homebuyers and remortgagers to sign their mortgage deeds online using a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) means they can bypass traditional, time-consuming methods. This process is contingent on their solicitor or conveyancer being equipped for QES. Nationwide believes this method will not only expedite transactions but also reduce administrative burdens and improve security within the home-buying process.

This change is part of Nationwide's overarching strategy to modernize and streamline the home-buying framework in the UK. Collaborating with HM Land Registry, Your Conveyancer, and Veyco, Nationwide aims to address long standing issues in buying property, such as delays due to extensive documentation and physical signatures. This move represents a significant shift toward the digitalization of the mortgage landscape in Britain, reflecting a broader trend in the financial sector towards technology adoption.
