Nationwide makes major change across 605 branches for customers
Nationwide is enhancing accessibility at its 605 branches across the UK by publishing detailed access guides, making it the first major UK bank to do so.
Nationwide has announced a significant accessibility initiative affecting its 605 branches across the UK. This initiative, which is being developed in collaboration with the accessibility experts AccessAble, aims to inform customers about the accessibility features available at each branch. Currently, access guides for over 500 branches are available, with a commitment to include all 605 branches by the end of May 2026. These guides will detail important accessibility options such as step-free access, hearing loops, and support for British Sign Language (BSL), catering to the needs of a diverse customer base.
The timing of this announcement comes amid a concerning trend of rapid branch closures among high street banks, with reports indicating that as many as 37 branches are shutting down per day in 2024. In contrast, Nationwide has pledged to maintain all of its 605 locations open until at least 2030, showcasing its commitment to serving customers in physical locations. By enhancing accessibility, Nationwide not only improves the experience for individuals needing additional support but also positions itself favorably in a challenging banking environment.
Furthermore, this initiative taps into the economic potential of the 'Purple Pound', estimated at £446 billion, which represents the spending power of disabled individuals in the UK. By making their services more accessible, Nationwide aims to attract and retain a wider customer demographic, thus reinforcing its commitment to community values while addressing crucial social needs in banking. This move not only reflects an understanding of a growing market segment but also aligns with broader societal calls for increased accessibility and inclusivity across service industries.
