The LRT working group will ask the Seimas board to extend the deadline for preparing the legislative proposal
A working group in Lithuania is requesting an extension from the Seimas to finalize legislation regarding the simplification of procedures for dismissing the LRT director.
During a meeting, Juozas Olekas, the head of the working group, proposed to the Seimas board on Friday to extend their deadline by two weeks for finalizing the legislative proposal. This request comes after previous attempts in December to pass amendments regarding the simplified dismissal process for the LRT General Director quickly faced delays due to numerous comedic proposals from the opposition, which extended the discussions in parliament. Furthermore, the health issues of the Chairman of the Culture Committee of the Seimas, KΔstutis Vilkauskas, contributed to the project's failure to advance.
In December, a meeting involving the President, the Speaker of the Seimas, and leaders of parliamentary factions agreed to pause the urgent consideration of the public broadcaster's legislative amendments. It was decided that a working group representing parliamentary factions and media organizations should be formed to improve the government's proposed legislative variant. The aim is to complete this refinement by February 14th, ensuring that the law is accurately represented and meets the democratic standards before proceeding.
The initial proposal from the ruling party included provisions for voting during the appointment and dismissal of the LRT director, which has raised concerns about political influence in public broadcasting. The working group's efforts to refine and finalize this legislation reflect ongoing discussions about the balance between governmental oversight and the independence of public media, an essential debate in the context of safeguarding freedom of the press in Lithuania.
