Sister recounts Pekka Vennamo's tragic end – it was supposed to be just a 'small operation', then bacteria struck

Pekka Vennamo, a former Finnish minister, died unexpectedly after complications from a routine surgery.

Pekka Vennamo, a notable former Finnish minister and ex-chairman of the SMP party, passed away on February 9, 2026, at the Meilahti Tower Hospital in Helsinki. His sister, Meri Vennamo, recounted his last moments, explaining that he initially went to the hospital in good health for what was described as a 'small operation.' However, after the surgery, despite initial reassurances sent via text where he mentioned the operation went well, his condition rapidly deteriorated due to a bacterial infection that severely impacted his organs.

Meri Vennamo expressed the shock of how quickly her brother's health declined following the surgery. The bacterial infection that entered his bloodstream led to significant strain on his heart, liver, and kidneys, resulting in his transfer to intensive care. Within a few days, he succumbed to the complications, highlighting the unpredictable nature of postoperative recovery, particularly in older patients. During his final days, while he was occasionally aware, he spent most of his time sedated, with family members visiting him.
