"Politico": I. Ruginienė spoke about Lithuania's "Plan B" regarding US troops in Europe
Lithuanian Minister I. Ruginienė discusses the importance of strengthening European defense and the role of US troops in Europe amid security concerns.
In a recent interview with Axel Springer Global Reporters Network, Lithuanian Minister for National Defense, I. Ruginienė, emphasized the need for robust European military forces in conjunction with US troops to ensure regional security. Ruginienė articulated a 'Plan B' for Lithuania that prioritizes bolstering the European Union's defense strategy, highlighting that national forces alone cannot guarantee safety against potential threats. This statement comes as a reflection on the shifting geopolitical landscape following Russia's actions in Ukraine.
Ruginienė noted, "We need the armed forces of European countries and US troops," underlining the collaboration necessary for effective defense. NATO currently protects Lithuania with a presence that includes a German armored brigade and rotational US forces, which participate in training and operations alongside Lithuanian and allied troops. The Minister's comments underline a growing consensus within Eastern Europe about the importance of a coordinated defense effort, particularly as tensions with Russia remain high.
Following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent conflict, the US has progressively increased its military presence in the eastern flank of NATO. Ruginienė expressed her hope that US troops would remain in Lithuania, asserting that, when it comes to security, there is no room for complacency, and illustrating the mutual interests of both Europe and America in maintaining a strong military posture. Her statements reinforce Lithuania's strategic call for a united European defense initiative in the face of external challenges.
