D. Tsiodras in the European Parliament: The time for truth has come for Europe
Dimitris Tsiodras, a Greek MEP, emphasizes the need for the EU to recognize its external borders as common frontiers and speak with a unified voice on global issues.
Dimitris Tsiodras, a Member of the European Parliament and spokesperson for the New Democracy European group, delivered a compelling message during the plenary session of the European Parliament, asserting that the time for truth has arrived for Europe. He stressed the importance of the EU utilizing the current crises to advance its objectives, particularly in terms of reinforcing the idea that the external borders of member states should be perceived as the borders of the European Union itself. Tsiodras highlighted the need for Europeans to feel secure, regardless of where they are located.
During his address, Tsiodras expressed concern about the EU's reliance on external security and the need to take an active role in shaping global developments rather than merely observing them. He criticized the historical pattern of European nations becoming 'consumers of security', implying that they have passively accepted security provisions without actively contributing to them. In light of shifting global dynamics, he called for a reassessment of Europe's role and responsibilities on the world stage.
Tsiodras concluded by pointing out that despite the EU's significant population of 450 million and its diverse economic power, it still lacks a unified voice, representing 27 different perspectives instead of a singular, coherent approach. He argued that this disunity impedes the EU's ability to leverage its collective strength and influence in international affairs, urging member states to come together to speak with one voice on pressing global issues.
