Fire guts 10 shops in Ibadan
A fire at the Iya Maryam Adebara Complex in Ibadan destroyed 10 shops, with no casualties reported.
A significant fire incident occurred on Monday night at the Iya Maryam Adebara Complex located in Ogunpa Market, Ibadan, resulting in the complete destruction of 10 shops. The Oyo State Fire Services Agency, led by Chairman Mr. Moroof Akinwande, reported that they received an emergency call at 8:11 PM and promptly dispatched firemen to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters found ten shops already engulfed in flames and acted swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent properties.
Fortunately, due to the quick response of the fire service and the collaboration with the Federal Fire Service, no casualties were recorded despite the extent of the fire. The cause of the fire was attributed to a generator being improperly fueled by one of the shop occupants, highlighting ongoing safety concerns regarding fire hazards in markets. The timely intervention of the police from Iyaganku Police Headquarters also contributed to the successful management of the situation, ensuring public safety.
This incident underscores the need for better fire safety measures in crowded marketplaces like Ogunpa Market, where such fires can have devastating effects not just on businesses but on community safety as well. Authorities may be compelled to review and enforce fire safety regulations to prevent future occurrences, especially in densely populated commercial areas of Ibadan.
