Lapland has abundant rime ice, but the idyllic scenery also has its downsides

Lapland is experiencing beautiful snowy landscapes enhanced by layers of heavy rime ice on trees, creating both stunning views and challenges.

In Lapland, the winter landscape has been radiant for a long time, with snow-covered trees garnering admiration. The heavy accumulation of rime ice, known as "tykkylumi," has made the scenery fluffy and picturesque, allowing locals and visitors to enjoy these views as long as the weather forecasts hold. Meteorologist Alberto Blanco Sequeiros from the Finnish Meteorological Institute notes that the amount of rime ice or the duration of the season is not officially tracked, but he considers the current conditions exceptional in Rovaniemi. According to him, since January 20th, frost and snowfall have accumulated on trees, particularly accentuated on deciduous trees where branches and trunks bend under the weight of the snow.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute reports that no significant changes in weather conditions are expected soon, meaning that the wind will remain mild and temperatures will stay below freezing. These conditions are advantageous for the formation of rime ice, which occurs when there is a high level of moisture in the air, typically with fog and drizzle. This beautification of the environment, however, comes with its downsides; the heavy weight of rime ice can pose risks to trees and infrastructure, as well as affect daily activities in the region. The balance of enjoying the idyllic scenery while being mindful of its challenges is highlighted in this report on the current state of Lapland's winter landscape.
