Kang Sun-woo sends a letter to the ruling party ahead of the vote on the arrest warrant… "I will correct the points that are different from what is known"
Independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo sent a letter to fellow members of the Democratic Party apologizing for the controversy over a political donation while insisting on correcting misconceptions about the situation.
Kang Sun-woo, an independent lawmaker facing an arrest warrant over allegations of receiving a political donation of 100 million won, reached out to Democratic Party members on October 10 to address the issues surrounding his situation. In his letter, he expressed regret for the concerns his case has caused, stating that he does not plan to hide or avoid responsibility. He emphasized his intention to clarify misunderstandings stemming from media reports about the donation allegations.
In his correspondence, Kang revealed that he met former Seoul city councilor Kim Kyung last January amid preparations for the 2022 presidential election, during which he acknowledged receiving a gift of 100 million won contained in a shopping bag. He maintained that he was unaware of the amount at the time, claiming it was treated as an ordinary gift and that he neglected to remember it. Kang also recounted the moment he recognized the gravity of the situation when he was confronted about the gift after proposing a nomination initiative during an internal party meeting.
Kang described feeling overwhelmed by the revelation, stating he immediately instructed his staff to return the money and sought to communicate with the party’s nomination committee about the matter. His letter expressed a commitment to fulfill his duties as a committee member despite the emotional turmoil he was experiencing, highlighting the tension between maintaining integrity and facing public scrutiny in light of the allegations.
