Estonian youth increasingly see artificial intelligence as a friend
A recent study reveals that Estonian youth view artificial intelligence not just as a learning tool but also as a communication partner.
A new study conducted by EU Kids Online shows that the digital behavior of Estonian children and youth has significantly transformed in recent years. Compared to a previous study conducted in 2018, there is a noticeable increase in internet usage, particularly for educational purposes, making digital environments an integral part of young people's daily lives. This growth in usage has also led to increased exposure to online risks, but it does not necessarily indicate a deterioration in their overall well-being.
Professor Veronika Kalmus from the University of Tartu, who served as the lead author of the study, highlighted that this iteration of the research was the first to specifically examine the use of artificial intelligence in conjunction with the mental well-being of young people. One of the most significant changes noted is the rising trend of using the internet primarily for studying, as students rely more heavily on digital resources to aid their learning processes. This shift reflects the growing integration of technology in education and social interactions.
Furthermore, an interesting aspect of the findings is the deepening relationship between Estonian youth and artificial intelligence. The research indicates that young people increasingly perceive AI not merely as a tool but as a companion, suggesting a potential shift in how technology influences their social interactions and emotional lives. The implications of this change warrant further exploration into how AI might play a role in enhancing or challenging youth's social experiences in the digital age.
