Proposal from municipal leader: Driverless taxi in Mullsjö

A municipal leader in Mullsjö, Sweden, proposes the introduction of fully autonomous taxis following successful vehicle technology tests in the country.

In Mullsjö, Sweden, municipal councilor Per Högberg has proposed the idea of introducing fully autonomous taxis in the region. This comes in response to rapidly advancing technology in driverless vehicles, with companies like Tesla already testing similar technologies in locations such as Nacka, albeit with a safety driver present. Högberg believes that the introduction of self-driving taxis could be a reality as soon as this fall, given the ongoing tests of autonomous technologies across Sweden.

However, no formal political decisions have been made yet, and the proposal requires approval from Sweden's Transport Agency before it can be implemented. Högberg is optimistic, citing the progress made in autonomous vehicle technology and the interest generated by recent developments in the area. Furthermore, Kongsberg, a company based in Mullsjö, has announced its plans to become a hub for the development of control technology for self-driving vehicles, which Högberg considers an advantage for the potential project.

Importantly, should this pilot project come to fruition, the operation of the taxi services is expected to be run commercially by a private company. This shift to unmanned taxis could significantly lower the cost of rides, making the service more accessible and potentially transforming local transportation dynamics in Mullsjö.
