Traveling home for the Lunar New Year holiday: 7 hours from Seoul to Busan on the 15th... expected 10 hours for return on the 17th

The number of travelers during this year's Lunar New Year holiday is expected to rise by 9% compared to last year, with significant travel times predicted between Seoul and Busan.

This year's Lunar New Year holiday, known as Seollal, is expected to see an increase in travel activity, with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport projecting that a total of 27.8 million people will travel during the six-day holiday period from January 13 to 18. Although total travel numbers may decrease by 13.3% compared to last year, the daily average of travelers is expected to increase by approximately 9% due to the shorter holiday duration. Reports indicate that the traffic volume on highways is set to rise by 14.1%, suggesting heightened activity over the holiday period.

The busiest travel days are anticipated to be January 15 for return journeys to hometowns and January 17 for return trips to the cities. Specific travel times estimate that it will take about 7 hours to travel from Seoul to Busan on the 15th, while the return trip on the 17th is expected to take around 10 hours, significantly affected by the volume of travelers. To alleviate traffic congestion, the government has implemented various measures, including extended operating hours for bus-only lanes and waiving toll fees during the holiday.

Additionally, research shows that about 31.4% of the population plans to travel during this Seollal. The government aims to prevent congestion at airports by easing departure procedures by up to 30 minutes for international flights, while ensuring free parking for families with multiple children and individuals with disabilities. Special discounts up to 50% on KTX (Korea Train Express) tickets will also apply for trips to underpopulated regions, illustrating the government's proactive approach to manage holiday travel effectively.
