Ski and Snowboard Association rewards Kim Sang-kyum with 200 million won and Yoo Seung-eun with 100 million won
The Korean Ski and Snowboard Association announced cash rewards for Olympic medalists Kim Sang-kyum and Yoo Seung-eun following their success at the Winter Olympics.
The Korean Ski and Snowboard Association (KSSAA) has committed to awarding substantial cash prizes to snowboard Olympic medalists Kim Sang-kyum and Yoo Seung-eun. On October 10, 2022, it was announced that Kim would receive 200 million won for winning a silver medal in the men's parallel giant slalom at the event held in Livigno, Italy, while Yoo would receive 100 million won for securing a bronze medal in the women's big air competition. These medals mark the first and second for the Korean delegation at the ongoing Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, representing significant achievements in the realm of Korean winter sports.
The KSSAA has been proactive in increasing the prize money for international competitions over the years, particularly since they began receiving support from the Lotte Group in 2014. In a notable contrast, during the previous Beijing Olympics, the association had set prize amounts of 300 million won for gold, 200 million won for silver, and 100 million won for bronze, but no medals were achieved. The current financial rewards for Kim and Yoo are not only a celebration of their accomplishments but also a motivational gesture aimed at encouraging future athletes in the sport.
The KSSAA has also established a reward system for athletes who finish in fourth to sixth place, recognizing their efforts even if they do not secure a medal. The association's international department director, Ryu Je-hoon, shared that Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin, a long-time skiing enthusiast, has personally taken an interest in rewarding even those who place just outside medal contention, showing a commitment to fostering talent in Koreaβs skiing and snowboarding disciplines.
