FG implements renegotiated ASUU agreement, pays 40% allowance increase
The Nigerian Federal Government has begun the implementation of a 40% salary increase for university academic staff as part of a renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Nigerian Federal Government has initiated the implementation of key welfare provisions from its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This step is aimed at enhancing staff welfare and stabilizing the public university system. The announcement was made by Boriowo Folasade, the Director of Press and Public Relations for the Federal Ministry of Education, emphasizing the government's commitment to educational stakeholders and the goal of maintaining industrial harmony within federal universities.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, revealed that the government has begun enforcing a 40% increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance for ASUU members, with the rise effective from January 1, 2026. Some federal universities are already implementing this increase in their salary payments, which signifies a positive change for academic staff who have faced challenges relating to their compensation and working conditions over the years.
This development reflects the Federal Government's ongoing efforts to honor previous agreements with ASUU and reinstate trust among stakeholders in the education sector. By addressing staff welfare issues, the government aims to prevent future industrial actions and create a more stable academic environment. This move is significant in the context of Nigeria's educational landscape, where strikes and disruptions have historically plagued the sector, affecting students' learning experiences.
