Being drunk is no longer stylish. Why is alcohol consumption decreasing?
Alcohol consumption in Latvia is decreasing, attributed to both market dynamics and the challenges faced by leading producers like Amber Latvijas balzams, which is seeking legal protection.
In Latvia, the consumption of alcoholic beverages is on a decline, as noted in recent industry reports. This trend is partially attributed to the dominance of local producers in the market, although many are considerably smaller than the market leader, Amber Latvijas balzams. Davids Vītols, Executive Director of the Latvian Alcohol Industry Association (LANA), expressed optimism that the largest alcohol producer's filing for legal protection might enable it to restructure and continue operations despite its recent challenges.
The importance of brand recognition in the alcoholic beverages market cannot be overstated, with established brands holding significant value. Mārtiņš Barkāns, the founder and owner of SIA Abavas dārzu, highlighted the historical strength and stability of the Latvijas Balzama brand portfolio. He remarked that he would be surprised to see these brands vanish from store shelves, indicating a belief in their resilience within the current market conditions.
Amber Latvijas balzams's decision to seek legal protection is a response to a series of ongoing external issues, including the confiscation of Russian assets and a downturn in the market, which have been cited as major challenges facing the company. This situation reflects broader trends in consumer behavior as well as the complexities facing the alcoholic beverage industry in Latvia, leading to a decrease in alcohol consumption across the nation.
