Rain hits Southwest, South, and North zones of Rio causing flooding and water pockets
Heavy rains in Rio de Janeiro have caused significant flooding in various neighborhoods, leading to water accumulation and disruptions.
After a weekend marked by heavy rainfall, the city of Rio de Janeiro experienced further flooding and water accumulation on Monday, the 9th. The Operations and Resilience Center (Cor) reported multiple affected areas including Barra da Tijuca, Recreio, and Lagoa in the Southwest and South zones, as well as Cascadura in the North zone. Notably, streets in Piedade are completely flooded, and water has gathered in several other regions, such as Avenida Niemeyer and the Jardim Botânico.
The Cor recorded alarming precipitation levels, with Piedade seeing the highest at 63.2 mm, followed closely by Barra da Tijuca at 62.2 mm and Jardim Botânico at 60.2 mm. The persistent rain has raised the city to a stage 2 alert since Saturday, indicating the potential for severe weather conditions. Looking ahead, the forecast suggests that while the unstable weather will persist, the intensity of the rain is expected to decrease in the coming days.
These weather conditions not only pose immediate challenges for residents affected by flooding but also highlight the ongoing infrastructure and resilience issues faced by the city. Continued monitoring and preparedness for future weather events will be crucial for public safety and for minimizing disruption in daily life across the varied zones of Rio.
