Cost of the basic basket has decreased by 4.9% until 2026 due to Pacic: Profeco

The implementation of the Anti-Inflation and Cost of Living Package (Pacic) has led to a 4.9% reduction in household spending in Mexico, according to Profeco.

The Mexican government's implementation of the Anti-Inflation and Cost of Living Package (Pacic) has reported a significant impact on household expenses, demonstrating a cumulative 4.9% reduction in the cost of the basic basket since its initiation. Iván Escalante, the head of the Federal Consumer Prosecution Office (Profeco), stated that this initiative aimed to keep food and essential product prices accessible for families, with the average cost of the basic basket dropping to 886 pesos by November 2024. Escalante emphasized the benefits of the project as he presented data during the daily press conference, 'La Mañanera del Pueblo'.

In terms of specific products, there are 24 essential items that are part of this program, which are being monitored to ensure their prices do not exceed 910 pesos. The latest price tracking showed that Chedraui Centro in Veracruz offered the lowest price for this basket at 757.90 pesos, while Walmart in Culiacán was the most expensive at 941.40 pesos. This price monitoring is part of the government's broader strategy to combat inflation and ensure that essential goods remain affordable for low and middle-income families.

The implications of these measures are significant for ordinary Mexican families, as they directly influence their purchasing power and overall financial stability. If maintained, this 4.9% reduction could provide relief in a time where economic pressures are felt most during inflationary periods. Such government initiatives also reflect an ongoing commitment to support vulnerable populations and maintain economic sustainability, which is vital for long-term recovery and growth.
