Used car sales dropped in January: what is the threat that worries agencies
Used car sales in Argentina saw a decline in January, raising concerns among dealerships due to competitive pricing from Chinese car manufacturers.
The used car market in Argentina started the year on a downturn, with sales figures showing a significant decrease. January saw the transfer of 153,070 used vehicles, which is a 10% drop compared to January 2025, where 170,046 units were sold. Compared to December's numbers, which recorded 151,994 units, the increase was minimal at just 0.71%. This decline has industry insiders worried, particularly with the influx of competitively priced cars from China.
The Argentine Automotive Commerce Chamber (CCA) highlighted the worrying trend of emerging Chinese automotive brands, offering attractive pricing and high-quality features, especially in the hybrid and electric segments. Alejandro Lamas, secretary of the CCA, pointed out that these new entrants are reshaping the competitive landscape by providing vehicles that cost effective and equipped with advanced technology. For instance, certain electrified models priced at up to $16,000 in China benefit from a waiver on import tariffs before even reaching Argentine soil, making them even more appealing in the local market.
As the market adapts to these new competitive pressures, the question arises regarding how local dealerships and consumers will respond to the changing dynamics. The concern focuses on the sustainable growth of the used car market in Argentina, as continuous shifts in consumer preferences could significantly alter sales trends. Stakeholders are thus urged to develop strategies that enhance their offerings to stay competitive against the international influx of budget-friendly vehicles, particularly as they navigate through this turbulent period in automotive sales.
