São Luís commerce will have altered hours during Carnival

Commerce in São Luís will have modified hours during Carnival, operating only on Saturday and Sunday, while remaining closed on Monday and Tuesday.

The commerce sector in São Luís, Brazil, will experience changes in operating hours during the Carnival period as announced by the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services, and Tourism of the State of Maranhão (Fecomércio-MA). According to the established schedule in the Collective Labor Agreement of 2026, retail shops, shopping centers, and galleries will operate only on Saturday (February 14) and Sunday (February 15) of Carnival. On the following Monday (February 16) and Tuesday (February 17), all stores are mandated to remain closed, prohibiting work for employees and any compensation for hours worked via bank hours on those days.

Following this announcement, operations for commercial outlets in São Luís will resume as usual on Wednesday (February 18) starting from 1 PM. The Fecomércio emphasizes that these alterations in work hours during Carnival do not apply to supermarkets and pharmacies, which are governed by their distinct collective agreements allowing them to function normally throughout the festive period. This decision is likely aimed at aligning with traditional practices during Carnival while also allowing for the necessary downtime for retail employees.

As Carnival is a significant cultural event in Brazil, such alterations impact not only the retailers but also local consumers who may rely on varied shopping hours for their festivities. This move reflects a broader trend of supporting worker rights and acknowledging local customs during major events, illustrating the delicate balance between commerce and cultural celebrations in São Luís.
