Man sentenced to 16 years in prison for attempting to kill ex-partner inside church in MT

A man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for attempting to murder his ex-partner during a church service in Sorriso, Brazil.

The Jury Court of Sorriso has condemned Fabiano de Souza Freire to 16 years in prison for attempting to kill his ex-partner inside a church. According to the Mato Grosso Public Ministry, Freire went to a religious temple where the victim was participating in a service and requested her to be called for a conversation. At the time of the attack, the woman was holding their youngest child in her arms, making the situation particularly harrowing.

Eyewitness accounts and investigations revealed that the victim was assaulted with a roughly 30-centimeter-long makeshift knife. The attack was narrowly averted as churchgoers intervened and restrained the assailant until the Military Police arrived on the scene. This incident shines a light on domestic violence issues, especially as the couple had been together for approximately 15 years, during which they had three children, but separated about two years prior, a situation that the accused did not accept, leading to his violent actions.

The prosecutor emphasized during the trial that the victim had already faced prior threats and physical abuse from her ex-partner, highlighting a disturbing pattern of behavior. By the end of the trial, the jury acknowledged the aggravated circumstances surrounding the crime, ultimately leading to a substantial sentence for Freire, underlining the judiciary's stance against domestic violence in Brazil.
