Africa: The IAEA and OCP Group Partner to Strengthen Global Food Security
The IAEA has partnered with OCP Group to enhance food security through innovative agricultural practices using nuclear technology.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced a strategic partnership with the OCP Group, a leader in plant nutrition, to address the challenges of global food security. This five-year collaboration aims to accelerate scientific innovations in sustainable agriculture and bolster resilient food systems, particularly through the Atoms4Food initiative. With this partnership, both organizations seek to improve fertilizer efficiency and nutritional quality of crops while ensuring the sustainability of food production practices.
Under the partnership, a coordinated research project (CRP) will be initiated, applying nuclear and isotopic techniques to provide on-the-ground benefits for farmers, especially in regions that are currently facing significant food security challenges. The strategic collaboration aims to develop practical solutions that can be implemented in agricultural practices, thereby enhancing the productivity and sustainability of food systems worldwide. The involvement of OCP Group, with their extensive expertise and commitment, is expected to amplify the impact of the Atoms4Food initiative.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that it represents a significant advancement in strategic collaboration for global food security. The initiative not only aims to benefit farmers directly but also to contribute to broader efforts in ensuring food security in regions dependent on resilient agricultural practices. This merger of nuclear science with agricultural innovation is seen as a critical step towards addressing pressing global food security issues, aligning with international goals and the needs of vulnerable populations.
