Africa: AWLN Elders Lead High-Level Advocacy on Sidelines of AU Summit

Women leaders are mobilizing for high-level advocacy to enhance women's participation in leadership roles during the AU Summit.

During the 39th African Union Heads of State Summit, women leaders from the African Women’s Leaders Network (AWLN) are focusing on a high-level advocacy agenda aimed at increasing women's roles and representation in leadership and decision-making processes. The initiative is rooted in a commitment to ensure that women have full, equal, and effective participation in various leadership capacities across the continent.

The day of advocacy is set to commence with the 9th Empowering Women in Agriculture (EWA) - AWLN High-Level Breakfast, which highlights women's contributions to agriculture, food system transformations, climate resilience, and the economic upliftment of rural women. This gathering aligns with the AU's current year's theme and recognizes the International Year of the Woman Farmer, emphasizing the pivotal role of women in achieving sustainable agricultural practices and food security in Africa.

The agenda will also include a Fireside Conversation featuring Africa’s current and former female presidents, intended as an intimate space for discussion on critical leadership topics, governance, peace, and the impact of female leaders on Africa's development. This segment aims to inspire and strategize on how to enhance women's leadership and ensure their voices are heard in the political sphere, wrapping up with a meeting for strategic discussions among AWLN Elders to reflect on advancements and challenges in women's leadership.
