City Hall of Petrópolis opens registration for the first stage of dog and cat sterilization in 2026

Petrópolis City Hall has begun registration for a free dog and cat sterilization program, allowing 1,200 residents to sign up for the procedure.

The City Hall of Petrópolis, located in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, has launched the registration process for a free sterilization program for dogs and cats, starting on Monday, September 9. This initiative, organized by the municipal Health Department, aims to provide 1,200 spots for residents in specific areas such as Caxambu, Morin, Alto da Serra, Meio da Serra, and the city center.

During the initial phase of the program, registrations will occur on designated days at various health units and partner community associations. Participants can expect to schedule their surgery right away, as the procedure is free of charge and the date and time will be confirmed at the time of registration. To enroll, caretakers need to present an identity document, CPF (Brazilian individual taxpayer registry identification), and a current proof of residence; there is no need to bring the animal at the time of registration.

This effort reflects the city's commitment to controlling pet populations while enhancing community health and safety. By providing easily accessible registration points across different neighborhoods, the local government aims to encourage participation among residents, ultimately leading to more responsible pet ownership and reduced stray animal numbers in the area.
