Disqualified snowboarder Takamiya explains on social media, 'I don't know the cause' - fluorine detected on board
Disqualified snowboarder Masaki Takamiya reported on social media that he does not understand why banned fluorine was detected on his board during the Winter Olympics qualifiers.
At the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Masaki Takamiya, a 39-year-old snowboarder, was disqualified during the qualifiers due to the detection of banned fluorine components on his board. After competing in the first qualifying round, Takamiya was not allowed to participate in the second round for a chance to advance, causing him to be in disbelief about the situation, stating he wished it was a nightmare instead of reality. In interviews, he emphasized that he had used the same board and wax as in previous competitions, where he had never tested positive for duty-bound fluorine before.
Takamiya took to social media to provide more details, reporting that there was no fluorine detected in the front portion of his board, while a clear fluorine response was found towards the back. He expressed confusion over the finding and clarified that despite performing his waxing routine during practice, the final waxing was done by a professional due to logistical issues he faced at the Olympics. He pointed out that his usual service professional was at a different location during the Games, which led him to ask his team coach for assistance with the waxing job.
In a bid to understand the cause, Takamiya also mentioned conducting an unofficial re-test with a fluorine detection device that returned negative, indicating no fluorine was found. Additionally, he has requested footage from surveillance cameras around the waxing cabin to try and identify any possible third-party interference. Takamiya concluded by stating his position, indicating that he does not consider himself a medal candidate and sees no reason for anyone to intentionally sabotage him, highlighting an overall sense of bewilderment over his disqualification.
