Scandal in sprint skiing – an entire national team was disqualified

An entire South Korean women's sprint skiing team was disqualified at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics due to the use of banned fluorinated wax.

During the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, a remarkable event unfolded as an entire team was disqualified in the women's sprint skiing event. The South Korean representatives, Dasom Han and Eui Jin Lee, had their times completely removed from the results after initially failing to qualify based on their times. This drastic measure was taken by the International Ski Federation (FIS) due to the athletes' use of fluorinated wax, which has been banned since 2023.

According to Doris Kallen, the FIS World Cup coordinator interviewed by Expressen, the regulations regarding fluorinated wax are very clear, and the disqualification had little room for debate. She stated that it was not within her purview to disclose the specific values measured from the skis. Normally, skis undergo testing before the competition, but in this instance, the South Korean duo was allowed to compete before their equipment was tested again post-performance.

The incident raises significant implications for the South Korean team's participation in future competitions, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny around compliance with anti-doping regulations in skiing. The fact that the team was allowed to compete raises questions about the testing processes and whether more stringent measures need to be implemented to prevent such occurrences in the future. This scandal could potentially tarnish the athletes' reputations and those of their national sports authorities, emphasizing the importance of adhering to guidelines set forth by governing bodies like FIS.
