Winter strikes with double force. Ice and frost up to -19 degrees
Meteorological authorities in Poland have issued alerts for freezing rain and extreme cold affecting several regions, with the coldest temperatures expected to reach -19 degrees Celsius.
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) in Poland has released a series of alerts warning citizens about the onset of freezing precipitation and extremely low temperatures. Central and southwestern Poland are expected to be hit the hardest, with forecasts predicting hazardous weather conditions impacting ten provinces including Lodz, Silesia, Opole, and parts of Lublin, Greater Poland, Lower Silesia, Masovia, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Lesser Poland, and Holy Cross regions. The likelihood of encountering freezing rain leading to dangerously slippery conditions has been estimated at 80 percent.
Residents, particularly those in the at-risk provinces, are advised to exercise caution due to the anticipated icy conditions. Both drivers and pedestrians should be vigilant, as the last occurrence of ice led to numerous injuries requiring hospitalization. Many patients reported waiting hours for care, having sustained injuries from slipping on icy sidewalks and streets. The health system is expected to face strain during this period as walking becomes treacherous for many.
The report further mentions that large areas of Poland will experience severe frost, making outdoor activities especially risky. With temperatures potentially plummeting to -19 degrees Celsius in certain areas, there is a pressing need for individuals to prepare adequately for the extreme weather, ensuring safety not only from falling but also from potential hypothermia and other cold-related health issues that could arise.
