Dom Pedro Highway completely closed after truck crashes into guardrail in Campinas
A truck accident on the Dom Pedro I Highway in Campinas led to the complete closure of the highway after the vehicle crashed into a guardrail, causing fuel leakage and prompting drivers to seek alternative routes.
On Monday morning, a truck lost control and collided with a guardrail at kilometer 132 of the Dom Pedro I Highway (SP-65) in Campinas, São Paulo, resulting in the total shutdown of the road in the direction of Anhanguera. The incident occurred during a maneuver to avoid a nearby vehicle, as reported by the truck driver, Luciano Soares. He explained that due to rain and visibility issues, he attempted to brake to avoid a collision with a passenger car that suddenly entered his lane, resulting in his truck crashing into the guardrail.
Reports from EPTV, a TV Globo affiliate, indicated that the truck was empty and was en route from Barbacena, Minas Gerais to Cosmópolis, São Paulo. During the crash, the truck's diesel tank was punctured, resulting in a fuel leak that contaminated the road surface. The Rota das Bandeiras, the highway concessionaire, has advised motorists to use alternative routes while the situation is addressed, highlighting potential delays caused by the closure.
This incident underscores the ongoing safety concerns on Brazil's highways, especially during inclement weather when road visibility can significantly reduce. The authorities' response to mitigating hazard risks and ensuring prompt road clearance will be critical in restoring normalcy and ensuring driver safety on this significant transportation route.
