Klempíř and Šťastný propose organizing a state funeral for Brejchová
Czech culture ministers propose a state funeral for actress Jana Brejchová following her passing at the age of 86.
Ministers of Culture Oto Klempíř and Boris Šťastný suggested today at a government meeting to organize a state funeral for the late actress Jana Brejchová, who passed away after a long illness at the age of 86. The proposal was announced by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Culture, Barbora Šťastná, who also mentioned that the ministers plan to approach Brejchová's family regarding this suggestion.
State funerals are reserved for particularly significant individuals, although Brejchová’s funeral would be a state honor rather than a full state funeral, which entails a more formal set of protocols. This distinction in honors was also highlighted by the recent state funerals for singer Karel Gott in 2019 and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Karel Schwarzenberg at the end of 2023. Such ceremonies usually include elements like the presence of a state flag and military participation, indicating the respect accorded to the deceased.
Jindřich Forejt, a former castle ceremonialist, noted that the presence of a state flag or soldiers at a funeral signifies state honors. The practice began in 2010 during the funeral of former ombudsman Otakar Motejl, and has since been selectively employed for other notable figures in Czech history, reflecting the country's recognition of cultural contributions from its artists and public figures.
