"Valstiečių" senior about STT searches on colleagues: "I'm not surprised, it should have come earlier"
A senior member of the Farmers' and Greens' Union comments on recent corruption-related searches conducted by the Special Investigations Service (STT) in the Lithuanian Parliament.
The senior member of the Farmers' and Greens' Union in Lithuania expressed that she is not surprised by the recent searches conducted by the Special Investigations Service (STT) regarding corruption in the State Plant Service. This sentiment relates to prior allegations involving an advisor to respected politician Saulius Skvernelis who is implicated in a corruption case. She speculated that the searches are linked not directly to Skvernelis himself, but to the workplace of his advisor who is under investigation.
On Monday, the STT announced it was carrying out searches associated with a corruption probe within the State Plant Service. The operation took place at the residences and offices of both Skvernelis and fellow conservative politician Kazys Starkevičius. Notably, many opposition members were absent from Parliament that day, raising questions about political dynamics. Skvernelis visited the Parliament shortly after the searches and claimed he was calm about the investigation, asserting he has not committed any crimes.
The investigation involves charges against Jurijus Kornijenko, the head of the State Plant Service, and twelve other individuals, highlighting a broader concern regarding corruption in political circles in Lithuania. With two notable politicians under scrutiny, the implications of this investigation may lead to increased political tensions and potential shifts in party dynamics as public confidence is challenged by corruption allegations.
