Re-election of Kohei Hashimura as the 225th Abbot of Todai-ji

Kohei Hashimura has been re-elected as the 225th abbot of Todai-ji temple in Nara, Japan, with a term lasting until March 2028.

On February 9, Todai-ji, the head temple of the Kegon sect in Nara, Japan, announced the re-election of Kohei Hashimura as its 225th abbot, a position he has held since April 2022. His term will last for 2 years, from April 1, 2026, to the end of March 2028. Kohei, who is currently 69 years old, has also maintained the role of the head priest of the sect and has a background in Oriental history, having graduated from Osaka City University and pursued further studies at Ryukoku University.

In addition to Hashimura’s re-election, the temple also confirmed the re-election of Kamizukasa Eisho as the chief priest. This decision comes amid a broader focus on preserving cultural assets in Japan, particularly in light of recent challenges faced by heritage sites. As a prominent cultural institution, Todai-ji plays a significant role in maintaining the religious and historical narrative of Japanese culture.

The leadership changes at Todai-ji highlight the temple's ongoing commitment to its traditions and responsibilities within the Kegon sect. As both abbots prepare for their new terms, their leadership will be crucial in navigating the future of the temple and its cultural heritage, especially in a context where cultural preservation is increasingly challenged by modernity and environmental factors.
