[Editorial] ‘Takaiichi’s overwhelming victory’, must prepare for negative impacts carefully

Sanae Takaiichi's Liberal Democratic Party achieved a historic victory in the recent Japanese House of Representatives election, placing the future of Japanese democracy at a crucial juncture.

Sanae Takaiichi, the Prime Minister of Japan, celebrated a landmark victory in the recent House of Representatives election, where her party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), secured over two-thirds of the seats. This result marks the first time a single party has obtained such a majority since the establishment of Japan's post-war pacifist constitution, effectively granting the LDP the ability to implement nearly all of its policies without opposition, except for constitutional amendments. The significant decline of centrist and leftist political forces, which traditionally acted as checks on the LDP's more extreme policies, indicates a potential shift towards more authoritarian governance under Takaiichi's leadership.

In this election, the LDP won 316 of the 465 total seats, making up 67.9% of the House, while its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, added another 36 seats, giving them a staggering combined majority of 75.6%. Although the upper house (House of Councillors) remains divided and the coalition does not hold a clear majority there, any legislation passed in the lower house can still be re-voted and passed if it garners a two-thirds majority in the upper house. In contrast, the centrist ‘Center Reform Coalition’ suffered severe losses, and the traditional Social Democratic Party was left without representation, highlighting a shift in public sentiment as voters, fatigued by decades of economic stagnation, appear to favor Takaiichi’s adventurous and hardline policies.

Takaiichi declared the dissolution of the House of Representatives last month, indicating her intentions to embark on a significant policy shift regarding core national issues. Her administration plans to dramatically increase defense spending through the revision of three key security documents, enact laws to lift weapons export restrictions, and implement a counter-spy law. As she emphasizes Japan's territorial integrity and sovereignty, upcoming events, such as the Takeshima Day in Shimane Prefecture, could see high-level government participation, prompting discussions on the implications for Japan's international relations and regional security dynamics.
