A prisoner who escaped from Alytus prison and hid for almost half a year was caught by the police
Mantas Tamkevičius, an inmate who escaped from Alytus prison, has been apprehended by the police after nearly six months of hiding.
Mantas Tamkevičius, a convicted inmate from the open prison of Alytus, was captured on February 3 while being transferred from Panevėžys District Police Headquarters to Šiauliai Prison. He had been on the run since September 2, 2025, when he failed to return from work, prompting a search by law enforcement authorities. Tamkevičius's escape highlights issues of prison management and the challenges faced by authorities in tracking down escaped inmates.
The escape had raised concerns regarding security measures in place at the open prison facility in Alytus, as well as the effectiveness of communication between different law enforcement agencies. After an extensive investigation, the police managed to locate and apprehend Tamkevičius, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring public safety and holding offenders accountable for their actions.
The case also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges within the penal system, particularly regarding the balance between rehabilitation opportunities for inmates and the necessity of maintaining security protocols. As more such incidents may arise in the future, discussions about improvements in the monitoring and supervision of inmates are likely to become increasingly relevant in Lithuania.
