Dramatic Training Video of 'Atlas' Running on Ice and Tumbling Released

Hyundai Group is preparing to deploy its humanoid robot Atlas in production, showcasing its advanced capabilities in a recent training video.

Hyundai Group, through its robotics subsidiary Boston Dynamics, has released a new training video featuring the humanoid robot Atlas, which is set to be integrated into production lines. The video, shared on YouTube, highlights Atlas performing complex actions such as side-stepping and tumbling. A particularly impressive scene showcases Atlas maintaining its balance while walking on an ice surface, demonstrating significant advancements in the robot's physical control abilities.

The video also candidly presents moments where Atlas struggles, such as losing balance while trying to turn backward or slipping on the ice. This transparency has been interpreted by viewers as a demonstration of Boston Dynamics' confidence in their technology, as they included footage of the robot's failures alongside its successes. The researchers behind Atlas indicated that they are conducting final testing to explore mobility and control limits with support from the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (RAI) Institute.

Looking ahead, Atlas is slated for training that will allow it to adapt to Hyundai's manufacturing environment, following the company's announcement during CES 2026 that it intends to deploy Atlas in its MetaPlant America in Georgia starting in 2028. Hyundai aims to establish a production system capable of manufacturing 30,000 robots annually by 2030, integrating them into various assembly processes.
