Seongnam City Launches ‘Driverless’ Shuttle... Free Operation of Two Routes Starting from the 26th
Seongnam City will begin free operations of two driverless shuttle bus routes starting on the 26th, aimed at improving mobility and access in the area.
Seongnam City is set to launch two routes of self-driving shuttles, which will commence service on the 26th of this month. The shuttles will operate from the mobility hub near Moran Station, providing a total of 28.3 km of transport through two designated routes. These shuttles, which can carry up to 14 passengers, will be free to the public for a trial period of two years, running on weekdays during specific hours. The goal is to enhance connectivity between the new and old town areas, as well as improve access to cultural and tourist spots in the region.
The initiative not only offers a new transportation alternative but also ensures enhanced safety measures. Each shuttle will be accompanied by a safety officer responsible for pre and post-ride vehicle checks and addressing any unforeseen circumstances during operation. While the shuttle aims to operate autonomously, there will be flexibility incorporated into the driving protocol, allowing for manual control in congested traffic areas—especially important in zones frequented by vulnerable road users like children and the elderly.
This program represents a significant advancement as it is the first in the country to implement autonomous driving within protective traffic zones. The city is also establishing a lidar-based infrastructure and an integrated monitoring system across the routes, aiming to enhance vehicle awareness of the surrounding traffic environment and ensure rapid responses to unexpected situations. This pioneering effort makes Seongnam a leader in the advancement of smart mobility solutions in South Korea.
