The 'Sixth Moon' Rises Over Gyeongpo Lake... A 10m LED Sculpture Will Be Installed
A large LED sculpture of the moon will be installed at Gyeongpo Lake, aiming to enhance local tourism through the 'Moonlight Art Show'.
Gyeongpo Lake in Gangneung, a key tourist site, will soon feature the largest LED sculpture of the moon in South Korea, measuring 10 meters in diameter. This project, part of the Moonlight Art Show initiative, was officially announced by the city of Gangneung on the 9th as they embark on enhancing the area's cultural and historical tourism offerings. The project aims to create a cohesive tourist route connecting historical sites like Ojukheon and Seongyojang with natural spaces, promoting not only individual site visits but also enriching the local economy through increased consumer traffic in surrounding areas.
The centerpiece of this initiative is the LED moon sculpture, envisioned as a symbolic landmark that will enhance Gyeongpo's night scenery. During the day, the sculpture will serve to strengthen the spatial identity of the area, while at night, the Moonlight Art Show will feature a blend of light, video, and storytelling, showcasing unique media art. Gyeongpo Lake has a storied history tied to the legend of five moons reflecting on its surface, and this installation aims to both honor that tradition and modernize the tourism experience in the region.
The city plans to officially launch the Moonlight Art Show in July after production and installation phases, with an ongoing commitment to introducing seasonal themes and content to revitalize night-time tourism. The project represents a significant investment in local tourism infrastructure, with hopes that an increase in visitor dwell time will translate into greater spending in the local economy, as outlined by Kim Geun-cheol from Gangneung's tourism development department.
