Resettlement Program: Implementation in 8 New Areas in Spring with a Bonus of 10,000 Euros

Greece plans to expand its resettlement program to eight new areas, providing financial incentives and addressing demographic challenges.

In early March, Greece's Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family will present a bill for public consultation, which will incorporate improvements to the Resettlement Program, including its expansion into eight regions in Western Macedonia. These regions—Kastoria, Kilkis, Serres, Florina, Pella, Drama, Kozani, and Grevena—are set to experience an increase in the number of eligible beneficiaries, all part of the National Action Plan for Demographics. This initiative aims to bolster the population in areas severely affected by economic challenges, particularly due to the coal phase-out process.

The Greek Prime Minister highlighted these efforts in his weekly government review, stating that Western Macedonia is the most demographically vulnerable area in the country. To make the program more attractive, the government is broadening the eligibility for a financial support of 10,000 euros. This move is particularly crucial as the region faces significant societal and economic pressure stemming from its transition away from coal, highlighting the urgency of such demographic policies.

Overall, the expansion of the Resettlement Program is aligned with Greece's broader strategy to combat demographic decline and improve living conditions in underserved areas. By incentivizing relocation and providing financial support, the government aims to revitalize these communities and ensure a more balanced demographic distribution across the country. This initiative reflects a response to both immediate economic challenges and long-term demographic trends, aiming to create a more sustainable future for Western Macedonia.
