Institutions Prepare Exercises to Assess Simplified Transit Control Procedures Through Lithuania

Lithuanian authorities are conducting exercises to evaluate and coordinate the control procedures for simplified transit through the country.

Lithuanian institutions are organizing exercises aimed at assessing the control procedures for simplified transit routes through the country, as stated by Mindaugas Bajarūnas, advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs. The exercises are being led by the Police Department and will evaluate the coordination and response of public safety services to potential extraordinary events. Participants will include the Lithuanian police, State Border Guard Service, Public Security Service, and representatives from the railway transport sector.

Due to the nature of the exercises, temporary traffic stoppages and checks for vehicles and pedestrians may occur in certain areas. The simplified transit, often referred to as the Kaliningrad transit, is based on existing agreements between the European Union and Russia, which outline the obligations of both parties. The procedures were decided to be reviewed following an incident last June where a Russian citizen, born in 2004, escaped from a transit train traveling through Lithuania.

In response to this incident, improvements have been made to the checks and escorting mechanisms for transit transport. Agreed coordinated efforts between the State Border Guard Service, Lithuanian police, and Public Security Service are aimed at enhancing the overall security and efficiency of transit measures across Lithuanian territory, particularly in light of the sensitivities surrounding cross-border movement between the EU and Russia.
