Election Commission Files Police Report Against Candidate for Using Deepfake in Promotional Video
The Election Commission in Ulsan filed a police report against a candidate for allegedly creating and sharing a deepfake video to promote their campaign for the local elections.
The Ulsan Nam-gu Election Commission has taken a significant step in regulating the use of technology in political campaigning by filing a police report against a candidate identified as Mr. A. This action follows the candidate's alleged creation of a deepfake video using artificial intelligence (AI) for promotional purposes ahead of the June 3 local elections. The report was made on the 9th, marking the first instance of a candidate being reported under new laws that impose harsher penalties for spreading false information using deepfake technology, which were enacted in December 2023. The central Election Commission highlighted that Mr. A's video claimed he was recognized by a renowned foreign weekly magazine as a leading figure in development, yet did not make clear that it was AI-generated.
