Police Notify Assemblyman Kim Byung-gi of First Summons... 'Investigation Prepared'
Police in Seoul have notified independent lawmaker Kim Byung-gi of a summons for questioning over allegations of illegal political funding and favoritism, nearly six weeks after the initial accusations were made.
Law enforcement in South Korea is currently investigating independent lawmaker Kim Byung-gi, who previously served under the Democratic Party, for allegations surrounding illegal political funding and various abuses of power. Police have officially summoned Kim for questioning, and ongoing investigations into multiple accusations have been in the works since December of the previous year. Seoul Metropolitan Police Chief Park Jeong-bo stated that the exact date for Kim's appearance is still being arranged, but emphasized that the investigation has been thorough due to the multitude of allegations against him.
The allegations against Kim include receiving illegal political contributions, misusing his spouse's municipal council operational budget, accepting accommodations from Korean Air, preferential treatment for his sonβs university admissions, and other related issues. Despite previous criticisms about the slow pace of the investigation due to the absence of Kim's summons until now, the police have been actively interviewing individuals related to the inquiries and have conducted searches to gather evidence.
Additionally, police are pursuing further investigations into other figures linked to the political landscape, including allegations of illicit campaign contributions ahead of the 2022 local elections. Chief Park affirmed the department's commitment to thoroughly examining all allegations, indicating that potential additional charges could arise from ongoing inquiries, regardless of the outcomes of the current cases against Kim and others.
