42 Accidents in Jeju Due to Snow... Heavy Snow Warning Lifted, Skies Opened Up
Jeju experienced over 40 accidents due to heavy snowfall over the weekend, but the heavy snow warning was lifted, allowing flights to resume.
Over the weekend, Jeju Island faced significant disruptions due to heavy snowfall that led to more than 40 reported accidents, primarily from January 7th to 9th, as the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters indicated. On January 8, a series of traffic accidents occurred in Hallim-eup, where four separate collisions involving 11 vehicles resulted in three individuals needing hospitalization. Additionally, there were reports of pedestrians slipping on icy sidewalks, causing various injuries and accidents including hikers falling on icy trails.
While the heavy snow warning which had affected mountainous and intermediate regions was lifted on January 8, it initially caused significant operational disruptions at Jeju International Airport, where flights were suspended for a time due to strong winds and heavy snow. A total of 176 flights were canceled, stranding over 13,000 passengers. However, the airport was able to implement temporary flights to accommodate stranded travelers, with at least 14 special flights scheduled for January 9 to transport those unable to leave the previous day. The airport officials noted that despite the heavy snowfall causing a surge in cancellations, the total number of travelers this weekend was fewer than usual, which helped in managing the situation effectively.
As travel conditions improved and flights resumed, officials reported a smooth operation at the airport, with the majority of stranded passengers expected to depart on the newly added flights. The local authorities managed to address and complete safety checks regarding structural damages to buildings and other infrastructures caused by the snow, ensuring the continued safety of residents and travelers alike.
