Army probes alleged military protection of drug peddlers in Lagos
The Nigerian Army is investigating claims that military officers were protecting drug peddlers in Lagos's Apapa-Iganmu area, following allegations from a local council chairman.
The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army announced a probe into allegations that some military officers are providing protection for drug peddlers in the Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State. The allegations were made by Jimoh Saliu, the chairman of the LCDA, who claimed that certain military personnel were shielding individuals involved in the illicit drug trade. This is particularly concerning given the strategic location of the area near the Tego Army Barracks, where military presence should ideally deter such criminal activities. Saliu specifically identified a location known as Gidan Drama in the Marine Beach community as a hub for illicit drug activities and other crimes. He described this area as a hideout for notorious criminals, indicating that it plays a central role in the illegal drug trade and possibly other criminal enterprises. The situation raised alarm among local authorities, suggesting a troubling intersection between military protection and drug trafficking that could undermine public safety and the rule of law. At an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Corona Schools Trust Council, Saliu voiced his concerns about the implications of these allegations for the safety of the community. He urged the state government and well-meaning organizations to take action, possibly to acquire the area and address the criminal activities reported. This plea underscores the urgent need for public intervention in reigning in the drug trade and restoring safety in the Marine Beach community.
