Teen Who Drowned Tried to Save Friend in Pond in Piauí; Neither Knew How to Swim, Says Police
Two 17-year-olds drowned in a pond in Piauí while trying to save each other, neither of whom could swim.
In a tragic incident in São Miguel do Tapuio, Piauí, two 17-year-old adolescents lost their lives while trying to save one another from drowning in a local pond. According to the Military Police of Piauí, neither of the teenagers knew how to swim. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when one of the teens entered the water for a swim and began to struggle. The other quickly jumped in to help, leading both to drown in the process.
Emergency services were called to the scene promptly. The police interviewed witnesses and requested the assistance of the Military Firefighters of Piauí for the search operations. Sadly, the bodies of the teenagers, identified as Luís Felipe Martins da Cruz and Luciano de Sousa Lopes, were recovered early on Sunday morning. Family members and the community are mourning the tragic loss of the young boys who were also described as neighbors.
In response to the incident, the mayor of São Miguel do Tapuio expressed condolences, highlighting the community's sorrow and the need for awareness regarding water safety, particularly for young individuals.
