Police in Ghostbusters Costumes Arrest 3 on Suspicion of Cell Phone Theft in Consolação
A couple of foreign nationals suspected of stealing cell phones in São Paulo was arrested by police dressed as Ghostbusters.
On Sunday afternoon in São Paulo's Consolação area, a couple of foreign suspects involved in stealing cell phones from carnival-goers was apprehended by civil police officers disguised as Ghostbusters, referencing the iconic 1984 film. The officers, working in the Department of Homicide and Protection of Persons (DHPP), observed the woman handing off stolen phones to a man, leading to their intervention. Upon arrest, four phones were found with the woman, while the man possessed an additional four.
During the same operation, another woman was arrested for having twelve stolen cell phones in her bag. The police action took place at a time when local festivities were in full swing, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement during events that attract large crowds. The operation underscores the vigilance required to deter thefts in crowded environments, particularly during festive periods.
The suspects' identities remain undisclosed, and the case is expected to be recorded at the 78th precinct in the Jardins area. This unusual police strategy of dressing in costumes has been employed for two consecutive days, aiming to blend in with revelers while keeping an eye out for criminal activity during the carnival season.
