The largest earthquake is 3.4

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded near Eldey on the Reykjanes Ridge amidst an ongoing series of seismic events.

A recent series of earthquakes has been occurring near Eldey on the Reykjanes Ridge, with the biggest quake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale. Reports indicate that although there were dozens of quakes recorded in one day, the activity has decreased following the largest tremor noted just before 5 PM. Jóhanna Malen Skúladóttir, a natural hazard expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, mentioned that while the intensity has lessened since the peak activity earlier in the day, the seismic event is still ongoing.

The earthquake series peaked between 1 PM and 3 PM with multiple smaller quakes following the significant one at 4:50 PM. Despite the proximity of these earthquakes to the land, resulting in potential felt tremors for residents, the Meteorological Office has not received reports of significant impact. This phenomenon is not unusual for the region, as minor earthquake swarms near Eldey occur several times a year, although the current swarm has exhibited a mild intensity drop after the major quake.

While seismic events like these can cause concern among the local populace, the Icelandic Meteorological Office continues to monitor the situation closely, assuring that while such swarms may cause some unease, they are a common aspect of the geological activity associated with the Reykjanes Peninsula.
