Earthquake swarm near Eldey
An earthquake swarm is occurring near Eldey off the coast of Reykjanesskagi, with dozens of small earthquakes recorded, the largest being 2.8 in magnitude.
An earthquake swarm has been occurring near Eldey on the Reykjanes Ridge, with reports of dozens of small earthquakes today, the most significant measuring 2.8 in magnitude. Jóhanna Malen Skúladóttir, a natural disaster specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, reassures that this is related to normal volcanic activity in the area. She mentions that the Eldey area experiences regular tremors and highlights that no significant quakes have been reported in populated areas.
In total, around sixty earthquakes have been detected in the last two days, showcasing the geological activity prevalent in this region. This swarm seems to have settled a bit, according to Skúladóttir, suggesting that the natural events in this area are common and not unexpected. The recent seismic activity has also occurred alongside a similar tremor event on the previous Friday, indicating a pattern of regular geological activity.
The public is informed that while the tremors can be concerning, particularly regarding potential volcanic eruptions in Iceland, they are part of the natural geological behavior of the region. Consequently, there is no current cause for alarm, as the authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates to ensure community safety.
