Paralympic swimmer Adriano Gomes de Lima, who won nine medals at the Games, has passed away at the age of 52 after battling bone cancer.
Adriano Gomes de Lima, a celebrated Paralympic swimmer from Brazil, died at the age of 52 on Saturday, October 7, 2023. His demise was attributed to a battle with bone cancer that began in 2024. The Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) announced his passing with a note of condolence on Sunday, October 8. Gomes de Lima was born in Natal, RN, and began swimming at 17 as part of his rehabilitation after a life-changing accident that left him paraplegic.
Gomes de Lima made his Paralympic debut in the 1996 Atlanta Games, where he quickly established himself as a formidable competitor by winning a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle. Over the course of his career, he represented Brazil in six consecutive Paralympic Games, concluding his incredible journey at the Rio 2016 Games. Throughout his illustrious career, he amassed a total of nine Paralympic medals, including one gold, five silver, and three bronze, with his notable gold medal achievement occurring in Athens 2004 during the 4x50m medley relay alongside fellow swimmers.
